Chill out lounges

Hi,

I was wondering about the existance of chillout lounges/bars/caf'es in Finland (Helsinki, Turku, Tampere). Here in Tampere there are some chillout evenings (Caf'e Europa), but in most of the places/parties I've been in the chill lounge is more a stage for DJs who play a wide veriety of dance music (from house to techno or trance).


Please share your thoughts - is a chill lounge needed? should it be chill or just another stage for other DJs with similar material to the main stage?

chillout music is a very wide concept, some people consider even disco & funk to be chill. imo the best way is to have a secondary room with no dancefloor, and djs there could play whatever they think is chillout (but with good taste of course ;))

Depends on the event, but the optimal combination is of course to have both a second room with alternative danceable music and a true chillout. If only one of them is possible, then I'd usually go for the chillout. And definitely a room where trance, uptempo house, techno etc. is played should not be called a chillout!

I don't mean a chillout should be 100% deep ambient or some such - this often isn't even possible due to sounds pushing through from the main stage - but music played at a chillout should be deep and/or laidback, listening-oriented instead of dance-oriented.

Too often you can see second-rate trance DJs spinning B sides of kiksu singles and this being called a chillout. I don't see a point in that. A chillout is a place where you can rest, immerse yourself into the music, have a conversation with a friend etc. Dancing is not forbidden, but making people dance should not be chillout DJ's main aim. If the promoter wants instead a room where other kind of dance music is played, then call it "stage 2" or "lounge" or whatever, but not chillout.

There is this finnish saying; 'oikeissa tansseissa on orkesteri', which can be roughly translated as: 'in real parties there is a chill-out' :)

I also see it the way you do - pure ambient can be as irritating as full on trance if goes on too long. I belive that some groove and 'movement' should exist in chillout, something you can shake along with and not just fall asleep...

I also understand that most times there is no budget for 2 alternative rooms (Chill and alt' dance), so maybe the best is a combination of both - low BPM chilly dance music that can satisfy both relaxing folks and the ones who want to dance to something else.

Funny that you ask about chillout lounges :) We have been having these chillout lounge events called HJ - Chillounge this summer in Helsinki. Too bad the Season Finale was last friday! Here's some information about the last one: http://www.klubitus.org/tapahtuma.php?id=5536. The music has been mostly IDM, ambient, house, elektro etc. No trance b-sides :)

Hope you find some cool parties, I'm off to Barcelona for some really cool chillout parties :)

I guess that many people have seen the movie "Groove" (a comedy about underground warehouse parties). This movie has a great example of a good chillout room.

By the way Juuso, there are also a lot of great ambient / chillout tunes in "kiksu B-sides" ;)
